While on the Ideal Protein plan I am not supposed to drink alcoholic beverages. Most of these drinks have a ton of sugar and calories…and to be honest I would rather eat my calories than drink them anyway.
But, what are you supposed to do in social situations when you are choosing not to drink? Happy hours, dates, dinners, going out with friends, dinner parties usually all include some sort of beverage!
I have become quite the master at just not drinking alcoholic beverages. The most important thing to remember is this: All the occasions where you would go out and drink are really set up so that you can interact and be with friends, family, coworkers, etc. So, instead of concentrating on the drinks, concentrate on those around you!
However, here are a few options that I habitually rely on when I don’t want to order an alcoholic beverage:
Just drink water – its a good rule of thumb to drink at least 2L of water a day. I am really good at keeping my water bottle with me and easily get past the 2L mark. However, water never hurt anyone! So, just get more water!
Try seltzer, tonic, club soda, or sparkling water – if you want something a little different try some water with bubbles. Add a lemon or lime and most people won’t even know you didn’t have an alcoholic beverage. Gin? What gin? 🙂
Diet soda – while diet soda isn’t great for you…it can be quite the treat if you haven’t had it in a while. I am not suggesting drink it all the time, but if you are going out this is another good option. Again, add some garnish and no one will know that you didn’t add some Jack Daniels on top!
Coffee – most restaurants, bars, houses, etc. have coffee. I love coffee so this is always a good option for me! Sip it hot or iced with a splash of skim milk and a packet of Splenda.
So, there are my 4 tips to avoiding alcohol and still having a good time! I hope this helps all of you on your path to a healthier life.
What tricks/tips do you use on this topic? I would love to hear about them in the comments!
