I share many healthy recipes here on My Beautiful Ideal. I rely heavily on my favorite kitchen tools to get those recipes made. So, I thought I would share what I consider to be my “kitchen tool essentials.” While this post is titled essentials for the “healthy cook” they are really just good things to have no matter what type of cook you are!
The items range from tools that I learned how to cook with from my mom and grandma to other things I have picked up along the way.
Knives – arguably one of the most important things you need in the kitchen. A durable, sharp set of knives will definitely get you started in the right direction. I have this Fiestaware Cutlery Set that I received as a Christmas present. The reasons I love this cutlery set 1) I love Fiestaware 2) Those babies are SHARP! 3) It comes with a sharpening tool to keep them sharp in the future.
TIP: Always handwash your knives it will help keep them sharper longer!
Cutting Boards – more specifically flexible, color-coded cutting boards. I love that you have multiple surfaces for cutting different things. No cross-contamination here! These Casabella Silicone Cutting Boards are the ones I have.
Food Scale – this one is especially important for you Ideal Protein newbies out there! Until you can visually assess portion size it’s so much easier to be able to weight it out…I mean no one really knows what 8oz of chicken looks like until you have done this for a while. When I started out I grabbed this Mainstays Round Digital Kitchen Scale from Walmart and it has served me well ever since.
Measuring Cups – pretty much the same concept as the previous item. What does 2 cups of broccoli look like? For dry ingredients, I have these Mason Jar Measuring Cups and for liquid ingredients, I prefer a good old Pyrex Prepware 2-Cup.
Cast Iron Skillet – a cast iron skillet is the best thing I ever got. It’s multipurpose, can go in the oven, and is non-stick. No need for saute pans, etc. this will do everything. I have the Lodge 12-inch Cast Iron Skillet. And the red hand grip shown in the picture is super important…if you don’t have one of those or an oven mitt you will burn your hand off!
TIP: Cast iron skillets can be used on flat-top stoves. Just be super careful and don’t move the pan around on the top and you will be fine.
Sheet Pan – this one is a no-brainer. You need a good quality sheet pan to make so many meals…brussels sprouts, asparagus, taco pizza…just to name a few 🙂 The pan you have seen so many times in my blog pictures is the Rachael Ray Oven Lovin Non-stick 11″x17″ Baking Sheet.
TIP: No matter what I am cooking I always line my sheet pans with foil or parchment paper. This addition makes for super easy cleanup!
Tea Towels – messes happen in the kitchen. Instead of using all the paper towels (even though I still do use them for cleaning up) have a tea towel handy. Whether you are grabbing something out of the oven or drying off vegetables after giving them rinse, tea towels are always handy. I have the Fiestaware Turquoise Strip Towels.
Storage Containers – no matter whether you are meal planning or just storing leftovers in the fridge good storage containers are a must! I have the Rubbermaid Easy Find Lid containers – both glass and plastic – in various sizes.
Ziploc Bags – and if all else fails, put your stuff in a trusty Ziploc Bag! I use these for everything – lunch prep, freezer storage, piping bags.
So those are my 10 Essential Kitchen Tools. Pretty much none of the recipes on My Beautiful Ideal would be made without them!
What is your favorite item in your kitchen? I would love to hear from you in the comments 🙂
